Fuck this day so hard. After running Desi off and getting into an argument with my son, it turns out that Colt was right. Carly Girl, one of our mares, started foaling early. I got there quickly, but she was already in distress. Even though Charity headed out as soon as we called her, the mare was already gone by the time she arrived. Thankfully, Charity was able to save the foal. It’s been a while since we had something like that happen here, and it sets a terrible mood for the day.

Abel, the new ranch hand whose name I finally remember, was the one helping me this morning, and I tried to explain that sometimes this just happens, but he was so distraught that I made him take the day off.

This means all of his responsibilities are now all of my responsibilities. Have I mentioned how much I hate the smell of horse shit? Mucking out the stalls, unfortunately, aggravates a shoulder issue I've been trying to ignore for the last few weeks.

“Why are you favoring your shoulder?”

I look up to find Sparrow watching me fuck everything up. “We lost Carly Girl this morning, and Abel was pretty upset. I told him to take the day.”

“I heard about Carly Girl. I’m so sorry, Wy. But I’m going to need you to stop what you’re doing right now.”

“In my own stables?”

“Yes,” he says, his face impassive. “Luke has a shoulder brace you can use. Then you need to go get some rest.”

I open my mouth to protest, but he holds up his hand, silencing me. “I love you, Wy, but you look like shit.”

My jaw drops even further. “Thanks, Sparrow. So glad my foreman feels comfortable enough to just give it to me straight.”

He smiles. “I'm not saying it as your foreman, Wy. I’m saying it as your friend and as someone who lives with a man who is in pain more often than he likes to let on. I might not be able to help you with what's hurting your heart, but I can damn well make sure your shoulder doesn't suffer because of your hardheadedness.”

Welp. Hadn't planned on having my ass handed to me today by my soft-spoken right-hand guy, but here we are. I thank him, and then Luke a few minutes later when he drives up with the brace in question.

The brace is made for a smaller man, but Luke insists on helping wrangle me into it. Despite the discomfort, the support is helpful. Not that I’d admit that to anyone.

Of course, as soon as Trip sees the shoulder, he comes right over. “Dad, what the hell? Did you hurt yourself?”

“No. Just lost a mare this morning, had to give Abel the day off. Started doing his chores and didn’t get very far.”

Trip shakes his head. “No, that's not how we do things. You give him the day off, then you tell me or Sparrow, and we spread out the work. You don't just go and try and do the work of a twenty-year-old.
